I have long been a critic of private prisons in America.
I think that they represent a conflict of interest, since many judges and lawyers own shares of stock in those private prisons with no laws or rules to restrict them from owning such stock. They have a financial interest in sending more people to prison and for longer periods in order to increase the value of their portfolios.
Here is an interesting testimony of how private prisons got started in the early 1990’s and how musicians were offered financial opportunities to buy stock in private prisons before they were formed. Musicians were told to do rap music and to use it to promote crime and violence in order to increase the prison populations.
The real victims here are in the black community, though it affects anyone who listens to this stuff.
