WASHINGTON -- The U.S. counterterrorism practice known as extraordinary rendition, in which suspects were quietly moved to secret prisons abroad and often tortured, involved the participation of more than 50 nations, according to a new report released Tuesday by the Open Society Foundations....

When he came into office, President Barack Obama pledged to end the U.S. government's use of torture and issued an executive order closing the CIA's secret prisons around the world.

But Obama did not fully end the practice of rendition, which permits the U.S. to circumvent any due process obligations for terrorism suspects.

One of the reasons that President Obama won his first election was because Americans were sickened by Bush's legalization of torture. Obama vowed to close down Guantanamo and stop the torture. But Guantanamo is still open for business, and the torture may have slowed down a bit--or perhaps it may have been driven underground. With a government full of secrets, it is difficult to hold them politically accountable for their actions.

I said years ago that if we allow the government to do such things, it will not be long before they begin to use torture on Christians. The fact that so many Christians have fallen for the government's argument that torture is necessary shows that they have forgotten early Church history.
