In John 14:2 Jesus says,
"In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would not have told you. I go to prepare a place for you."
The term "mansions" (KJV) is from the Greek word monee, "abiding places." It is related to the verb meno, "to abide." The word "mansion" does not really convey the idea at all, since it tends to conjure up thoughts of a multimillion-dollar house with 24 rooms and that many rest rooms.
In John 15:4, Jesus says, "Abide in Me, and I in you." That word "abide" is the Greek word meno, the verb form of monee, "abiding places." This explains the many abiding places that Christ has prepared for us. It is not a matter of abiding in heaven, but abiding in Christ.
To abide in Christ is ultimately to be part of His Body. There are many parts to His body, even as there are many cells in any body. Thus, in the "house" are many "abiding places." Each has a different and unique and important function in the body. We abide in Him, and He in us.
So John 14:2 is really explained by the following chapter in Jesus' discussion on how to "abide" in Him. It was necessary for Him to leave this earth in order to prepare such a place, because as long as He had a physical body, it was not possible for Him to have the type of spiritual body that could house many members (people).
